Servant leadership refers to moral-based leadership wherein leaders put the needs, aspirations and interests of their followers, who can be employees, customers or stakeholders, above their own. The term was coined by Robert K Greenleaf in an essay, which was published in 1970. Greenleaf asserted that such a leader is "primus inter pares" or "first among equals".
