What is sundowning syndrome, seen in elderly people with dementia?

Dr Sarthak Dave says sundowning syndrome is the evening worsening of confusion, agitation, and sleep issues in people with dementia, usually Alzheimer's dementia. Reduced light and sensory cues impair orientation, increasing distress and risk of fall. Some may appear drowsy due to medications. Management focuses on gentle lighting, consistent routines, cautious drug use, and calm reassurance.
