Jumping Frenchmen of Maine is a rare disorder wherein an individual has an extreme startle response, which includes jumping, yelling, hitting and sometimes even forced obedience. It was first described by American neurologist Dr George Beard. Beard had said, "If one person was suddenly asked to strike another, he would do so without hesitation, even when it was his mother."
