Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the Union Budget 2022 that e-passports with embedded chips will be rolled out in India in 2022-2023 to enhance convenience for citizens in their overseas travel. The electronic passports will have the applicant's biometric data stored on a chip, which ensures the passport is legitimate and has not been tampered with.
