NASA's logo, also known as 'the meatball', was designed by James Modarelli in 1959, the space agency's second year. The nickname was kept in 1975 to differentiate it from NASA's 'worm' logotype. In the logo, the sphere represents a planet, stars represent space, the red v-shaped wing represents aeronautics, and the white circle around the agency's name represents space travel.
