Johatsu or "evaporated" people is a phenomenon in Japan in which people voluntarily choose to disappear from their public lives without leaving a trace. Such a person reportedly relocates due to depression, addiction or to escape debt. French journalist Léna Mauger, who investigated the practice, claimed in her book that nearly one hundred thousand Japanese people vanish every year.
