JN.1 COVID-19 variant that is causing a rise in cases in Asia is a descendant of BA.2.86, a lineage of Omicron variant, that has acquired ability to transmit efficiently through an additional one or two mutations. It has immune evasion of its parent, as per Johns Hopkins University. There is some suggestion that JN.1 causes more diarrhoea than previous variants.
