What is 'urban heat island effect' that makes metro cities hotter?

The 'urban heat island effect' is attributed to higher temperatures in metro cities. It occurs when cities replace natural land cover with dense concentrations of pavement, buildings and other surfaces that absorb and retain heat. It increases energy costs, air pollution and heat-related illnesses and mortality. With decreased vegetation, cities also lose the evaporating cooling effect of trees.
