What led to the birth of ODI cricket?

The first-ever ODI was an impromptu one, played between England and Australia in Melbourne on January 5, 1971. The 40-overs-per-side match was played on what would've been fifth day of the washed-out third Ashes Test. It was played to appease crowd & recover financial losses for Don Bradman-led Australian board. Third Ashes Test was the third-ever Test to be abandoned.
