Chewing gums are made of gum bases which usually comprise indigestible manmade rubber, making them chewy. Additionally, different flavours and softeners are added to the gum base to prevent the gum from hardening. Prior to modern day chewing gum, gums were made from different tree compounds including mastic tree, chicle and resin from spruce trees.
