What's the best diet to lower cholesterol?

A vegetarian diet is considered the most effective diet to lower total and LDL cholesterol. Many people also prefer Mediterranean-style diet in which majority of daily food calories come from plant sources, especially fruits, vegetables and grains. Limiting processed foods and eating fish at least a couple of times per week is also part of the diet.
