What's the history behind Govardhan Puja?

Govardhan Puja is observed every year a day after Diwali to commemorate the victory of Lord Krishna over Lord Indra. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan parvat with his little finger to provide shelter to the people and save them from heavy rainfall. It's believed that after seven days of huge rainfall, Lord Indra stopped the rainfall.
