What to do if a police officer refuses to file an FIR?

A person who has been denied an FIR can approach a senior Police official or complain to the Judicial Magistrate. A Writ Petition can alternatively be filed in the High Court, seeking damages. It is necessary for a police official to file a First Information Report (FIR) in case of a cognizable offence like rape, rioting, and murder.
