An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off eastern coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. It originated from convergent boundary between Pacific Plate and Okhotsk Sea Plate. In this subduction zone, the dense Pacific Plate is being forced beneath the Okhotsk/continental plate at a rate of approximately 77mm per year. The mainshock occurred as a result of shallow reverse faulting, said India Today.
