The first Independence Day speech, popularly known as 'Tryst with Destiny' was given on August 15, 1947, by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. "At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom," Nehru had said. "A new star rises, the star of freedom in the east," he had said further.
