What was the fatwa issued by Iran against Salman Rushdie in 1989?

In 1989, the then Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against Salman Rushdie. Khomeini called for Rushdie to be killed for writing 'The Satanic Verses', which the cleric said insulted Islam. The British government had granted police protection to Rushdie after a $2.8-million bounty was put on the writer's head.
