Uruguay hosted the first FIFA World Cup from 13 July to 30 July 1930. During a period marred by economic depression in Europe, 13 nations participated after accepting invitations and no qualification process took place. Guillermo Stábile scored the first-ever World Cup hat-trick in the tournament. Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final to become first World Cup champions.
