Where did the peace symbol come from?

The peace symbol was designed by British artist Gerald Holtom in 1958 to represent a campaign for nuclear disarmament. The symbol was thus, developed by combining the semaphoric shapes for the letters 'N' and 'D'. Semaphoric shapes are used to send messages by holding two flags or poles in certain positions to form an alphabetic code.
