Where does space actually start?

Space is defined as something that has no air to breathe or scatter light. Fédération Aéronautique Internationale has theoretically demarcated the 'Karman Line' at a 100-km altitude as the boundary where space begins. However, according to NASA, "There is no hard-definable point where space begins... the atmosphere just gradually decreases the higher you get".
