Where does the term 'pole position' come from in F1?

Pole position is the first starting position on the grid in a Formula One Grand Prix event. The term originates from the late 19th-century horse racing, where the fastest-qualifying horse would be placed closest to the inside rail of the course, near the pole marking the start line. The expression was quickly applied to motorsports in the 20th century.
