Where was Mahatma Gandhi on August 15, 1947?
Mahatma Gandhi spent August 15, 1947, at Hydari Manzil in Calcutta, away from Delhi's Independence celebrations, to help prevent Hindu-Muslim violence amid Partition. He observed a day-long fast, prayed and spun yarn. He had chosen to remain in riot-hit Calcutta after local leaders urged him to help restore peace. Lord Mountbatten later called him a one-man boundary force in Bengal.
