Allahabad served as the capital of British India for one day in 1858 as the East India Company officially handed over India to the British government in the city. The British moved the capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911, while Shimla was the summer capital during 1864-1939. Delhi was formally inaugurated as the national capital on February 13, 1931.
