Among Latin America’s most powerful earthquakes was the 2010 Haiti earthquake, which killed over 300,000 people and caused an estimated $8 billion in losses. In 1970, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Peru, killing over 65,000 people. In 1976, a 7.5-magnitude quake hit Guatemala, leaving nearly 1.2 million people homeless. More recently, twin quakes in Venezuela killed over 6,000 people.
