As many as 687 people died in police custody across India in the last five years, the Lok Sabha was informed. Gujarat reported highest number of custodial deaths at 81, followed by Maharashtra with 80 such deaths. Fifty custodial deaths in Madhya Pradesh, 47 in Bihar, 41 in Uttar Pradesh and 36 in Tamil Nadu were reported during the period.
