The 1957 film 'Mother India', starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar, was the first Indian film to be nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars. However, the film didn't win the award and lost out to Italian movie 'Nights of Cabiria'. 'Mother India' won several awards in India, including the Filmfare Award for Best Film.
