The term Middle East was coined in 1902 by naval strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan while analysing British imperial routes. It reflected a Euro-centric view dividing the world into Near East, Middle East and Far East. Despite debates and alternatives like West Asia, the name still dominates global media, diplomacy and discussions today.
