India national flag 'Tiranga' was based on a design by freedom fighter Pingali Venkaiah, who was born on August 2, 1876. Venkaiah's design, originally for the Indian National Congress, was unanimously agreed upon in the presence of Mahatma Gandhi in 1921. Venkaiah joined the British Army at the age of 19, meeting Mahatma Gandhi during a war in South Africa.
