Who elects Chief Election Commissioner as SC questions exclusion of CJI from panel?
A panel comprising the PM, the Leader of Opposition, and a Union Cabinet Minister recommends the Chief Election Commissioner. The PM and the minister can form a 2-1 majority. In 2023, the Supreme Court said the appointment should be made by the PM, the LoP and the CJI, after which Parliament enacted a law, replacing the CJI with a minister.
