Captain Devi Sharan was in-charge of IC 814 Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Delhi that was hijacked on 24 December 1999 by five members of Pakistan-based Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. Captain Sharan was hailed as a hero for maintaining calm during the hijack. He secured permission to land in Lahore by indicating to authorities that he would crash-land the aircraft.
