Eugen Rochko, the 29-year-old coder behind Twitter rival Mastodon, moved to Germany from Russia with his family when he was 11. He did B.Sc in computer science from a public university in Germany and launched Mastodon in 2016 when he was still studying. "The idea behind Mastodon is that online communication shouldn't be beholden to one private company," he says.
