On April 16, 1912, an aviator and journalist, Harriet Quimby established history by becoming the first woman to fly across the English Channel. She took off from Dover, England and made the flight in 59 minutes, landing on a beach in Pas-de-Calais. The first American woman to receive a pilot's license, Quimby's interest in aviation began in 1910.
