Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, who has been appointed the next Chief of Army Staff, is an alumnus of National Defence College and US Army War College. The officer has an M.Phil in defence and management studies and two master's degrees in strategic studies and military science. He has been decorated with Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.
