Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy has taken oath as a Rajya Sabha MP, becoming India's first openly queer parliamentarian. Nominated by the Trinamool Congress, she is known for her role in the Section 377 case that decriminalised homosexuality. Born in Hyderabad in 1974, she was named among the TIME 100 Most Influential People alongside her partner and fellow lawyer Arundhati Katju.
