Google's Vice President of Engineering and Co-Lead of Gemini, Noam Shazeer, announced he is leaving to join OpenAI. This comes after Google spent $2.7 billion in 2024 on a licensing deal with Character.AI, a transaction tied to Shazeer's return to Google. He joined Google in 2000 and went on to become its most prominent AI researcher.
