Savitribai Phule, who was born in Maharashtra on January 3, 1831, was the first female teacher in the country. A victim of child marriage, she is known to have opened 18 schools for girls as well as a care centre for pregnant rape victims. She voiced opinions against Sati, untouchability, child marriage and other social evils.
