Shyamala Gopalan, the mother of US Vice President and Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris, was a breast cancer researcher who immigrated to the US from India in 1958. Gopalan was born in Chennai and completed her education at the University of California, Berkeley. She married Donald Harris and the couple shares two daughters, Kamala and Maya Harris.
