Taimur or Timur, born in 1336, was the founder of the Timurid Empire in Persia and Central Asia. His name Timur was derived from the Turkic word for 'iron'. It is estimated that 1.7 crore people were killed during his military campaigns, amounting to about 5% of the world population. He conquered several territories, including the north-western portion of India.
