Born on August 12, 1919, in Ahmedabad, Padma Vibhushan-awardee Vikram Sarabhai set up India's first rocket-launching site near Trivandrum and founded ISRO in 1969. He spearheaded the development of India's first satellite Aryabhata, launched in 1975. A mentor to late President APJ Abdul Kalam, Sarabhai completed his PhD from Cambridge University and was also a founding member of IIM Ahmedabad.
