Why are ATM keypads made of metal?

ATM keypads are often made from sturdy materials such as metal because they must withstand frequent use, cleaning and environmental exposure. The design can also offer some protection against thermal attacks that may reveal recently pressed digits. However, metal keypads do not make ATMs completely immune to such threats, with multiple security measures protecting users' PINs.
