Why are China's major cities sinking?

Nearly half of China's major cities are sinking faster than 3 millimetres per year, putting millions of people at risk of flooding and rising sea levels, researchers said in a new study. The land is sinking due to rampant groundwater extraction and the growing weight of cities. Other factors influencing subsidence include the use of transport systems and underground mining.
