Why can dense tree canopies make humid cities hotter?

Research from IIT Gandhinagar and Northeastern University has mapped 138 Indian cities. Their data reveals an urban greening paradox. In humid regions, dense tree canopies add water vapor to already saturated air and block wind, raising the perceived heat index by up to 2 degree celsius.
