Why did Mahatma Gandhi undertake the Dandi March?

Mahatma Gandhi and his followers left his Sabarmati Ashram on March 12, 1930, to protest against the British salt monopoly, and this came to be known as the Dandi March. The British exercised a monopoly over the production of salt, while collecting a heavy salt tax. Gandhi defied the laws by producing salt from the seawater upon reaching Dandi.
