Why did roots & shoots of corn plant grow tangled in space?

In a 1990s space shuttle experiment, NASA germinated dry corn kernels in microgravity. The seedlings developed healthy tissue, weight and hormone levels, but without gravity's directional cue, their roots and shoots grew tangled, losing the normal down-up pattern as on Earth. The findings revealed gravity's role in guiding plant growth, hence informing future space agriculture research.
