World’s third-smallest nation, Nauru, has changed its name to Republic of Naoero. The Pacific island nation said European colonisers renamed it Nauru because they found its native name, Naoero, difficult to pronounce. The government said the name Nauru emerged after “foreign tongues” distorted the native language, and that restoring Naoero would “more faithfully honour” the nation’s heritage.
