Old thick ₹5 coins disappeared because their metal value exceeded face value, leading to smuggling and melting, especially in Bangladesh, to make razor blades. To curb losses and shortages, the Reserve Bank of India introduced lighter coins using cheaper ferritic stainless steel, ending the illegal and profitable melting practice.
