Why didn't Honda and Nissan merge?

The $60-billion merger of rivals Nissan and Honda collapsed due to Nissan's pride, insufficient alarm about its predicament & Honda's proposal of making Nissan a subsidiary, Reuters reported. Nissan insisted on receiving near-equal treatment despite its weaker position. Honda pushed Nissan for deeper cuts to jobs and factory capacity, but Nissan was unwilling to consider factory closures.
