Why do aeroplanes have round windows?

The windows in an aeroplane are round or circular so that the stress due to pressure differences at higher altitudes can be distributed evenly across the surface, making it less likely to break. The shape was changed following plane crashes in the 1950s due to square windows. Engineers found that the edges of square windows created natural weak spots.
