Why do credit cards feel as addictive as drugs to the brain?

An MIT study using fMRI scans found that credit card spending activates the striatum, the brain's reward centre also linked to addictive drugs. Researchers said swiping a card provides instant gratification while delaying the "pain of payment", reinforcing spending habits. The study also found that simply seeing a credit card logo can trigger anticipation of pleasure and increased spending.
