Why do Mexican jumping beans hop?
Mexican jumping beans move because of moth larvae living inside the seed pods of the Sebastiania pavoniana shrub. When exposed to heat and sunlight, the larvae arch their bodies against the inner walls, making the pods jump. Research shows they move most under red light and use silk threads to repair damaged pods before emerging as adult moths.
