The Olympic medal biting tradition is believed to have stemmed from practice of merchants biting gold to discover if it was real or fake during the 1800s gold rush in California. However, the last time Olympic medals were made entirely of gold was in the 1912 Games. The athletes continued the tradition in subsequent Olympics because of the photographers' request.
